The 7th Republic – what 7th Republic?
As it wasn’t really clear where Touadéra was actually heading with his 7th Republic, beyond the endless ceremonies and speeches full of empty promises for the gullible, nothing has materialised; so we went to ask an expert. A leading intellectual and political figure in the Central African Republic – a real heavyweight, in other words! Laurent Gomina Pampali, but he doesn’t know either, saying it’s something Touadéra made up to keep the crowds occupied, or that if there is a 7th Republic, it’s because there were six others before it (which is stating the obvious). We’re lulled into the illusion of a reinvented Republic, but reality remains stubborn, for nothing has changed in the daily lives of Central Africans, living in a landlocked country, one of the poorest on earth, and surviving on humanitarian aid, So, his 7th Republic remains yet another mirage. “Take me to the ends of the earth, take me to the land of the sun, for I feel that misery would be even more terrible in the sun.” This refrain by Aznavour is not true.
