Susan’s Post...

Central Africans come up with an excuse to justify the poor quality of the country’s roads; they say, “Look at the neighbouring countries, it’s the same there,” and the same goes for everything. Seen in that light, development is an option they don’t tick. Do they know that the cassava they gorge themselves on is, firstly, of no nutritional value, and secondly, comes from the indigenous peoples of South America? That loincloths are Dutch, that mechouis or chouia, like motorbike taxis, are Asian! And they applaud blokes who cling to power beyond all reason, who rig elections like Touadéra, and who trample on the basic principles of democracy, and we’re proud of that! The country doesn’t even own any planes, forced to borrow them from elsewhere. Under Bokassa—whether you like him or not—he built the country’s only university, when there’s a plethora of them in the West; he built Boganda Avenue, complete with cycle paths, the central market, and so on. What remains of all that? Nothing but hot air! And the police have nothing better to do than track down acts of ‘anti-social behaviour’ on Facebook – a term that basically means not criticising the ruling regime. We’re living in a dictatorship, led by an autocrat who does whatever he likes. As for tourism in the Central African Republic, forget it, because once you leave Bangui, it’s the bush, and you can get killed in the blink of an eye. Half the country is starving, whilst the other half struggles to put a meal on the table once a day. And they’re talking about the 7th Republic – what 7th Republic! What sort of hoax is this? Saying this isn’t Afro-pessimism, it’s realism.
