Central African practices
Continuing the series on what sets the CAR apart: the country is no stranger to contradiction. It officially claims to be secular, yet mixes things up by introducing religion—even at the highest levels, including among ministers and the president. In fact, you cannot take a step in the country without someone talking to you about religion. Another contradiction lies in the constant stream of ceremonies—there is a ceremony for everything. While it is stated that men and women are equal, polygamy is accepted; look at Touadéra, with his wives and numerous mistresses. On a lighter note, no articles are used before titles like Cardinal, Professor, or Dr. (e.g., "Cardinal So-and-so" instead of "The Cardinal..."). Consequently, you will never see a sports match—in any discipline—pitting, say, Bangui against Bouar; since independence, there has been no national sports championship. Everything is centralized in Bangui, meaning national teams are essentially just Bangui teams. Another very Central African quirk: since the abrupt end of the Bokassa dictatorship, elections do take place, but cheating is rampant. Cheating has always been a feature of the polls—just as Touadéra cheated with his maternal uncle to become President (Dologuélé said so, but who listened?). Regarding practical matters, the country relies on foreign partners to pay for almost everything, yet—in a uniquely Central African twist—the country's leadership (president, ministers, etc.) appropriates these efforts as their own. For instance, the Tina Touadéra Foundation puts its name on a project to which she contributed nothing.Central African practices One might label all this "petit nègre" (a derogatory term for broken French spoken by colonial subjects) or "petit nègre" practices typical of former colonies, but it is something one must navigate in order to fit in.
