Central African Republic: A Secular State?

When it comes to absurdity, the Central African Republic (CAR) takes the prize. It is officially a secular state according to its Constitution, yet the head of state can be a religious cleric, and sitting ministers—such as Annie Michelle Mouanga, the Minister of Labor, Employment, Social Protection, and Vocational Training—lead worship songs and prayers with hands raised to the heavens. This occurred on Saturday, July 18, during a major worship service held in Bangui. It is akin to the CAR championing gender equality while officially permitting polygamy—or looking at President Touadéra, who, not content with his two wives, keeps a string of mistresses, one of whom is currently making life miserable for Mboli-Goumba. Returning to Annie Michelle Mouanga and her religious gathering: the event was attended by Tina Touadéra herself, along with religious leaders and numerous worshippers. One awestruck believer remarked: "If we rely on God, if we praise and worship Him with a sincere heart, He will act on behalf of our country. I believe God is faithful and will do something for the Central African Republic," said a participant after the service. By way of justification, Minister Annie Michelle Mouanga explained that she was answering a spiritual calling. "God put it on my heart to organize a time of worship for who He is and praise for all His blessings—especially the peace He has granted us. Even though our country is going through difficult times, we must rise as one to implore His grace." When will this country stop saying one thing while doing the exact opposite—or simply pretending?
