It has rained in Bangui, and it’s a disaster, as usual
Bangui is still completely unprepared to deal with the aftermath of the storms that hit the city, despite Touadéra’s propaganda-driven clean-up show every Saturday morning, and it’s always the same dismal sight of collapsed houses, disasters of all kinds, and so on... Just like last weekend, when it rained in several districts of the capital, and of course, as nothing is anticipated, for example, in the 9th district of Bangui where the catastrophic situation is, surprisingly enough, causing serious concern among the Central African authorities. More broadly, torrential rains have hit several districts of the capital and caused numerous homes to collapse. What is the government doing to prevent this? Nothing, apart from engaging in demagoguery and waiting for aid from foreign ‘partners’. And these partners are complaining, as they are trained to deal with emergencies, yet in the Central African Republic they are required to provide round-the-clock support; and it is of little use to see the Minister for Humanitarian Action dispatch a team to assess the damage. On the ground, with no government assistance to rely on, the affected communities are trying to cope with the aftermath of the disaster. Many families have lost their possessions and are forced to seek refuge with relatives or in makeshift shelters. Residents are calling for swift action to help them return to decent living conditions. And it’s not over yet; we are in the rainy season.
