4 Civil Society Leaders Arrested
In Bangui, four civil society leaders were arrested this Thursday at the Jean XXIII Center as they were preparing to hold a press conference regarding rising fuel prices, the high cost of living, and poor governance. Among those detained are Quentin Ngouandé, of the "I Gwé" platform, and Élysée Nguémalé, of the Observatory for Democratic Governance in the Central African Republic (OGDC). These arrests follow a complaint filed by supporters of the administration; the detentions were carried out by the FICU (Urban Intervention and Control Force) and the CNS (National Security Company). This raises concerns regarding freedom of expression in a state governed by the rule of law, where dissenting opinions should be allowed to be voiced.
